DIRECTOR OF YOUTH AND FAMILY MINISTRY

Christ the King Lutheran Church in beautiful Iowa City, Iowa is seeking a full-time Director of Youth and Family Ministry to accompany, encourage, and engage youth on their faith journey through a wide range of education & youth programs.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Youth and Family Ministry will encourage, inspire, and nurture on-going faith formation in children, youth, and families, working with a vision to integrate children and youth into all aspects of the life of the church. The Director will oversee the development of programming for the spiritual growth of children and youth as well as partner with staff and volunteers to create cross-generational programming and broader community connections. This position will build upon already established programs and allow for creativity and flexibility for new ideas.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Be present in the congregation, participate in Sunday worship services as a primary source of engagement with youth and their families.

2. Collaborate with youth committee, parish education committee, pastors, staff, and volunteers to seek creative means to encourage lives of discipleship in youth and their families, including:

a. Coordinate and participate in seasonal Sunday School events (Examples: Rally Sunday, Trunk or Treat, Christmas Program, VBS)

b. Initiate, develop, and implement venues for fostering faith formation.

c. Plan youth & family activities; fellowship and service opportunities (Friendsgiving, Youth Christmas Party, Easter Breakfast, Lenten Meals)

d. Teach Youth Sunday School

e. Assist Pastor with Confirmation (lead small groups)

f. Attend week-long summer Confirmation Camp at EWALU

g. Coordinate monthly fund-raising activities that support youth activities and trips

h. Attend week-long summer mission trip or youth gathering

i. Recruit, train, and support volunteers for ministries

3. Communicate in a regular, timely and effective manner using appropriate resources (conversations, website, social media, email, and print). Ensure communication with church staff and leadership, parents, and the congregation as a whole.

4. Minister to individual youth on a one-to-one basis as needed. Be available for visits in homes with youth and their parents. Seek opportunities to connect with and be available to youth at their schools, at sports events, and in the community. Stay current with and encourage participation in relevant activities, events, and workshops in the SE IA Synod, the ELCA, and other organizations.

5. Attend Staff, Parish Education and Youth Committee meetings. Provide monthly reports for the Council and write an article for the weekly newsletter.

6. Create a plan for professional development, continuing education, and personal renewal.

7. Be prudent with finances, creating a budget, and follow established financial protocol and develop policy.

8. May be assigned additional responsibilities from time to time

QUALITIES & REQUIREMENTS

1. Strong Christian background, preferably Lutheran, that includes a basic understanding of Lutheran theology and demonstrate a strong relationship with Jesus Christ, a shepherd’s heart for the team and for building well-rounded and healthy relationships with young people in and outside of worship experiences.

2. Bachelor’s Degree, Professional Certificate, or equivalent experience in Youth Ministry or elementary or secondary education or communications degree

3. Able to lead and teach prayer and Bible study.

4. Know when to listen and when to cheerlead.

5. Proficient in technology

6. Hold strong interpersonal, organizational, technical, verbal, and written communication skills. Be self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision. Work a flexible schedule and be organized in the management of time, tasks, resources, and money. Successful completion of a background check is required prior to employment.

7. Vehicle with a valid Driver’s License
